Make Your Own Prom Court Sashes

Make prom court sashes for the prom princesses.

At a high school prom, students often vote to nominate the prom king and queen from the student body. Sometimes other members of the prom court, such as a prince and princess, are also recognized during the evening. You can make the court sashes for the next prom by hand, to create a custom keepsake for the nominated students that they can keep with them for years to come.

Instructions

1. Cut a piece of 6-inch-wide ribbon to a length of approximately 72 inches. Cut one ribbon for each of the sashes needed for the prom court.

2. Draw a 45-degree angle at each end of the ribbon. Draw each line so that the top of the ribbon extends beyond the bottom of the ribbon. Cut off the excess fabric beyond the line. Use a fray stop treatment at the ends of the ribbon.

3. Fold the sash in half. Designate one half as the front of the sash and one half as the back.

4. Place a stencil on the front of the sash and trace the letters to spell "Prom Queen" along the front of the sash with a piece of chalk. Remove the stencil.

5. Embroider the letters onto the sash. Thread one or two strings of glitter embroidery floss onto a sewing needle and stitch over the chalk letters. Alternatively, you can trace over the chalk-stenciled letters with glitter fabric markers or paint.

6. Add a Velcro closure to the ribbon ends. Measure up approximately 3 inches from the bottom of each ribbon end. Find the center of the 6-inch-wide ribbon and apply a little bit of craft glue to the wrong side of each end of the ribbon. Press a small square of Velcro over the glue on each ribbon end. Let the glue dry for 20 to 30 minutes.

7. Add embellishments to the sash. You can leave the sash as it is or add iron-on decals to the edges of the ribbon.

8. Make additional prom court sashes and replace "Prom Queen" with "Prom King", "Prom Princess", "Prom Prince" and "Prom Court" to the additional sashes.
