Make Pipe Cleaner Leis

When you're having a party for your children, it's fun to let them create the decorations with you. Spend some quality time with your kids making flower leis for a Hawaiian-themed party. These chains of brightly colored pipe cleaner flowers are simple enough for school-age children to construct and make festive gifts for your guests as they arrive. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make a loop at the end of a pipe cleaner that measures about 1 inch across. Twist the end of the pipe cleaner around the stem two or three times to secure the loop in place. This loop is the first flower petal.

2. Make a second loop the same size, right next to the first one. Twist the base of this loop to make sure it stays tight.

3. Make a third and fourth loop in the pipe cleaner in the same manner as the first two. You now have four flower petals that meet in the center. Clip off any excess pipe cleaner with a pair of scissors.

4. Thread a second pipe cleaner through one of the loops on the first flower. Make a loop at the end of the second pipe cleaner with the flower petal enclosed inside.

5. Make three more flower petal loops on the second pipe cleaner to complete the flower.

6. Make more flowers, connecting them all together as you make them. Connect the last petal of the last flower to a petal on the first flower to turn the string of flowers into a lei.
