The possibilities are endless with homemade party invitations.
Creating invitations at home allows you to express your own creativity to the people on your guest list. You can also hint toward the theme of the party with the type of invitations you make. A child's birthday party invitation can be created with colorful fabric, for example, while an upcoming bridal shower invitation can be made with elegant scrolls.
Instructions
Fabric and Card Stock Invitations
1. Trace a 6-inch by 8-inch rectangle onto a piece of card stock. Cut out the rectangle and use it as a template to cut out as many invitations as you need. Use the template card stock to trace a rectangle onto a piece of fabric. Cut out the fabric rectangle and repeat this process for as many invitations as you require.
2. Use the card stock template to trace the same rectangle onto a piece of felt; cut out the rectangle and repeat. Trace a rectangle that measures 5 3/4 inches by 7 3/4 inches onto another piece of felt. Cut out the rectangle and repeat for more invitations.
3. Trace two of the smaller rectangle shape onto a piece of fusible web mesh; cut out the rectangles and repeat for more invitations.
4. Lay the larger piece of felt on a flat surface and place one of the fusible web mesh rectangles on top. Cover the mesh with the smaller felt rectangle, place the other fusible web mesh rectangle on top, and then place the fabric rectangle on top of that. Check to make sure all of the edges of the rectangles are aligned properly.
5. Press firmly and move an iron on a low setting over the top fabric rectangle, making sure the other layers stay in place as you go. Allow the joined fabric to dry for 30 minutes.
6. Apply glue to the card stock rectangle and align it over top of the joined fabric and use a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine to seam all four sides of the card stock and the joined fabric.
7. Use a calligraphy pen to write down the details of the party.
Scroll Invitations
8. Lay out a sheet of vellum paper on a flat surface. Apply a spray adhesive carefully to both ends of the paper. Place a metal dowel at one edge of the paper and roll the paper around the dowel. Repeat this step on the other end of the vellum paper.
9. Use a calligraphy pen to record the details of the party, including the guest of honor, date, time, place and reply to the invite. Set the paper and allow the ink to dry while you repeat these two steps to make more invitations.
10. Roll up the scroll invitation and tie a ribbon around the center of the scroll.
11. Place the scroll inside a long cardboard necklace box. Hand decorate the box with a gold or silver pen or marker. If you are more comfortable, use decal stencils to decorate the box.
12. Wrap a ribbon around the center of the box and tie the ends in an elaborate ribbon.
