Make Decorative Palm Trees For A Room With A Beach Theme

Use silk palm leaves to create an indoor palm.

Having a beach-themed room is a fun style for a kid's room or for a party, but just won't seem complete without a palm tree. Since purchasing a palm and placing it in the room is a bit impractical, you will need to make one. You will find that most of the needed supplies are readily available for purchase at local stores. The main item needed, however --a large cardboard tube -- you will need to obtain from a carpet store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set up an umbrella stand with the bottom pole of the umbrella, and slip a large cardboard tube over the pole. You can obtain a sturdy tube from a carpet store, but it will more than likely need to be cut down to size, since the rolls are fairly long. Use a handsaw to trim it down to the proper height for your room.

2. Open up brown paper bags and cut the bottoms out of them. Slip them over the tube and crumple them down. Keep stacking the crumpled bags until you have fully covered the tube. To keep them from moving around, use a stapler to hold them in place. Two staples per bag should be enough.

3. Cover the umbrella stand base if you didn't use a brown stand. Use brown burlap cloth to wrap around the base.

4. Attach the umbrella to the top of the pole and open it up. A green umbrella is best so that it is less noticeable from underneath.

5. Attach the silk palm leaves to the top of the umbrella with double-sided tape. If there are stems on your palms, snip them off so they don't show.
