Your typewriter can't be used until it's unlocked.
Smith Corona has been making typewriters for more than 115 years. Whether you own a manual Smith Corona or an electric model, from time to time the machine might seize or lock up. If your Smith Corona typewriter is locked, there are some simple steps you can try to clear the jam problem.
Instructions
Unlocking Your Smith Corona
1. Check that your electric typewriter is plugged in and turned on. If the problem persists, unplug the typewriter before moving to the next steps.
If your Smith Corona is manual, start with Step 2.
2. Ensure that the carriage return is fully unlocked.
3. Open the protective cover. Check that the print wheel is properly aligned, and that the ribbon cassette and correcting cassette are installed correctly and are not used up.
4. Look at the print hammer and hammer keys. If any are jammed together, gently separate them without bending them.
5. Check for any foreign objects that might have fallen into the typewriter.
6. Firmly close the protective cover. If the machine is electric, plug it back in and test it.
