Visit Luxembourg City Luxembourg On A Small Budget

Visit Luxembourg City Luxembourg on a Small Budget

Luxembourg City is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. With a population of just under 85,000, the city is not only the largest in the country but also one with the highest population density in the world. As an important cultural and historical center, Luxembourg City attracts thousands of tourists each year. For those on a tight budget, however, enjoying the city at its full potential can prove to be a challenge.

Instructions

1. Look for family-run accommodations. Hotels in Luxembourg City are notorious for their high prices, even if they are not located in the center or near the main attractions. Bed and breakfast, small family hotels or rooms rented in homes are your best bet if you have a small budget and you don’t want to spend it all on accommodations. There are few youth hostels in the city, of which the HI Hostel and the Luxembourg City Hostel are best because of location and overall look and feel.

2. Buy the Luxembourg Card as soon as you arrive in the city. The card gives you unlimited free rides in local buses and trains, discounts on long-distance transportation, free entrance to selected attractions and discounts on meals, souvenirs and specialized tours. The card can also be bought in advance at the official tourism website of the city of Luxembourg.

3. Visit in the off season. Luxembourg is especially expensive during late spring and summer, when visitors flock to the area to enjoy the greenery and the outdoors. Visit in April or in autumn and you are more likely to get special offers, discounts and overall lower prices.

4. Stop by the tourist information center at 30 Place Guillaume II to pick up free maps, coupons and discounted tickets. The staff can also point you in the direction of places that cater to visitors on a budget and help you make the most of your visit if you only have a limited time in the city.

5. Go to the attractions on your own. Organized tours are extremely expensive and you may end up with a group that doesn’t match your age or interests. Instead, pick up maps and a brochure and plan a trip to the Old Town, City Gardens, the Fortress and bridges on your own.
