Fondant animals are moderately easy to make; they just require time, patience and creativity.
Fondant is a creamy sugar paste that is commonly used by bakers in covering and making decorations for cakes. It can be pliable or hard, depending on the ratio of its ingredients. Due to its nature, it also can be used to make a variety of fanciful and edible shapes. Although the idea of making fondant into shapes, such as animals, daunts most home cooks, it can be done with a little practice and patience. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Instructions
1. Choose the color you want your animal to be, and select the appropriate colored fondant. For example, a lion would be yellow.
2. Take a piece of fondant that is slightly larger than a golf ball. Roll it gently until it is in an oblong shape--this will be the body. Look at the kind of shape you want to create for this animal; if it is chubby, make this ball more round, if the animal is sleek, make it longer.
3. Roll a piece of fondant, that is half the size of the previous body piece, into a ball for the head. Take other pieces of fondant and roll them into four sausages, all the same size as your pinky finger. This sizing can vary as well, similar to the body variations, due to the animal being sleek or chubby.
4. Flatten the ends of the sausages to make feet. Use the knife to create marks for paws or hooves.
5. Attach all the pieces together; use toothpicks to hold the parts together, if needed.
6. For little details, such as ears and eyes, use your discretion. Small balls can become eyes, and small triangles, ears. Use the markers to paint on any other details that are needed, such as stripes for a tiger.
