Making a Hawaiian headpiece is similar to making a lei.
Hawaiian costumes are popular for Luaus and at Halloween time. Creating a Hawaiian headpiece is similar to creating a lei. A Haku style lei is generally used as a headpiece. Customize your headpiece in colors that match your costume. Creating these is so simple and quick that several can be made in an evening and used as party decorations, or given away as gifts.
Instructions
1. Choose the desired flowers, ferns and leaves. Look for local and in-season flowers. Marigolds and carnations are often the most economical choices.
2. Measure the circumference of your head, and cut a piece of fabric to size. A 1-inch by 28-inch strip of fabric is standard. Check to be sure this fits comfortably around your head.
3. Gather small bundles of flowers, ferns and leaves. Leave your twine on the spool. Attach the flower bundles to the fabric strip by wrapping the twine around twice. Layer the individual bundles around the fabric strip.
4. Try the headpiece on to check for fit. Tie the ends of the fabric strip together with the twine, and cut off the excess.
5. Store your headpiece in a plastic bag in the refrigerator until you are ready to wear it. Wear the headpiece on your bare head or over a hat.
