Make two-color fondant hibiscus flowers to decorate a Hawaiian-themed cake.
You can decorate a Hawaiian-themed cake with an abundance of edible fondant hibiscus flowers, or top the cake with a single, enormous two-toned hibiscus flower instead. Coordinate with your color scheme using the party's two dominant colors, or present a rainbow bouquet of hibiscus flowers of different hues. Fondant hibiscus flowers are easy to make, so when you've finished the flowers for the cake, make a few extra as decorations for food trays.
Instructions
1. Roll out a piece of yellow fondant to about 1/16-inch thick. Use a rounded-petal fondant flower cutter to cut out a flower shape.
2. Place the flower cutout on a piece of foam padding. Press gently around the edges of the petals with a fondant ball tool to thin out the edges. The foam padding provides a plusher surface and helps add a bit of shape to the flowers.
3. Roll out a piece of orange fondant to the same thickness. Use a smaller pointed-petal fondant flower cutter to cut out a flower shape. Place the flower on the foam padding and press gently around the edges to thin.
4. Transfer the orange flower to the center of the yellow flower and press gently with the ball tool to blend it into the yellow. Press gently around the yellow petals with a fondant shell tool to imprint ridges.
5. Pick up the fondant flower and squeeze gently on the center of the underside to give it a hibiscus shape. Place it onto the concave flower shaper to hold the cupped shape while it dries.
6. Press one end of a white pearl stamen into the center of the flower. Let the hibiscus dry for 24 hours.
