Make Hawaiian Shirts For Kids

Help kids get into the Aloha spirit with a Hawaiian shirt.

For over a half century, Hawaiian shirts have captured the state's "Spirit of Place." Hawaiian shirts are usually light, bright and colorful. Although adults are often seen wearing these colorful shirts, kids enjoy them too. If you are having trouble finding the right Hawaiian shirts for kids, make your own. The process is relatively simple as long as you have a pattern to guide you.

Instructions

1. Purchase a shirt pattern from a local sewing or fabric supply store. The pattern should be a youth-size, loose-fitting, button-up style shirt.

2. Have kids pick their own choice of Hawaiian-themed fabric from the fabric store. Get as many yards as the pattern calls for - information will be listed on the back of the pattern package.

3. Purchase buttons for the shirt.

4. Use the pattern directions to cut out the pattern pieces. Then lay the pieces of the pattern onto your Hawaiian-themed fabric and pin with straight pins.

5. Cut out the fabric pieces using the pinned-on pattern pieces as your template.

6. Sew the pieces of fabric together according to the pattern instructions. The instructions will also show you create the button holes on the front of the shirt.

7. Sew each button on by hand. Be sure that you line the buttons up with the button holes.
