Make Homemade Luau Invitations
When making homemade luau invitations, there is an array of images you can use to embellish the cards, such as pineapples, coconuts, palm trees, grass skirts, Tiki torches, hula girls, Hawaiian patterns, hibiscus flowers and orchids, tropical beverages, sandy beaches, ukuleles and straw hats. If you can find small luau trinkets at craft stores or scrapbook stores, those can be glued onto the border of this invitation, for a three-dimensional look.
Instructions
1. Begin with 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch heavy copy paper. You can buy envelopes that will fit this size of paper when the paper is folded in half, horizontally. You can also use printer paper that is designed for cards which are folded horizontally.
2. Use the computer and printer to print the interior, text portion of the card. This avoids having to hand write the cards. Choose fonts appropriate for the occasion, and include the date, time and location of the event. When formatting the page, make the top margin 6 inches. Print one trial card out and fold in half, to ensure the text spacing is correct on the interior of the card, before printing the rest of the cards.
3. Fold the printed cards in half, horizontally, with the printing inside.
4. Cut the Hawaiian fabric into 5 1/2 inch by 8 1/2 inch pieces. You will need one piece of fabric for each card. Mix the glue with a little water in a paper cup, but do not make it watery. Paint the front of the card with the glue solution, covering the entire face of the card. Secure the fabric piece onto the card, and pat down. Give a coat of the solution to the outer surface of the fabric. Allow to dry.
5. Affix a picture on the center of the card. The picture should be smaller than the face of the card, allowing the fabric to border it. This might be a digital image you have printed from the computer or Hawaiian pictures you've cut from magazines. Or take a special photograph---such as you dressed in a hula skirt and holding out a platter of food---and print enough copies for all the invitations. Allow the cards to dry completely.
