Introducing new vocabulary to children is vital to their educational growth, as one cannot properly express thought or emotion through words otherwise. Many parents who homeschool their children are unsure create an age-appropriate vocabulary list for use in educational instruction. The creation of a meaningful and robust list requires only a few materials. Each list will cover one week of the educational school year, for use during the week following its creation.
Instructions
Prepare a Vocabulary Notebook
1. Label the pages of the notebook to coincide with the weeks of your school year, allowing two pages in the book per week.
2. Put the book in a place where it is easily accessible for adding new vocabulary words.
3. Older children will be adding to the book themselves. Instruct them enter the words into the book and where the book will be located.
Where to Find Vocabulary Words
4. Scan any reading material the child will be using for the week, looking for words that may be unfamiliar to them.
5. Write the words from the reading material in the notebook, making sure to leave space between words so that you may later add definitions and sentences.
6. Scan any lesson overviews for the week, looking for words that may be unfamiliar to the child.

8. Throughout the week, record any unfamiliar words that your child may come across through conversation, reading newspapers and magazines, and watching television.
Completing the List
9. In the notebook, record the definitions for the words in an organized manner using the printed or online dictionary.
10. Write sentences into the notebook, each employing a separate vocabulary word.
11. Record any additional information for each word that you find pertinent to your child's needs, such as word roots.
