When throwing the football nothing looks worse than a wounded duck pass that flops through the air towards the receiver. Not only does it look bad, it is more difficult to complete the pass because of increased wind resistance. That why any person passing the football must try to throw a tight spiral or they will face ridicule and failure.
Instructions
1. Grip the football with the thumb and index finger placed near the point at the back of the football. Then place the other fingers over the laces of the football to get a better grip when you throw the spiral pass.
2. Spread your feet just less than a shoulder width apart, with the leg on the non-passing side of the body extended in front of the body. Position the leg on the throwing hand side of the body slightly behind your body. Keep your lower body balanced and do not lean forward or back during the throw.
3. Rotate your hips as you start the throwing motion. Place the back foot in the ground to provide the proper leverage for good hip rotation on the throw. Remember that the power of the throw comes from the lower body and not the arm motion.
4. Bring the football straight back behind your head as you start the hip rotation. The football should almost touch the side of your head. Be sure to keep the elbow close to your body as you bring the football back.
5. Release the thumb from the football first as you move the football forward on the throw. Then rotate the wrist as you release the fingers from the laces. The throw should finish with your palm facing down towards the ground. This is the most important aspect of throwing a spiral football. The proper wrist movement may require the most practice time to master.
