A standing knot is a modern and elegant way to embellish the top of a wedding bell. Unlike a floppy, frilly bow, the standing knot is stiff enough to stand upright, acting as a handle, such as that found on a hand bell. Use these modern-looking knots to adorn wedding bells for favors, centerpieces or as "kissing bells" for guests to ring when they wish for the new couple to kiss.
Instructions
1. Choose a ribbon with some stiffness to it, such as a grosgrain or gingham, to help the standing knot sit upright. You can use other types of ribbon, but they will require a spray of fabric stiffener once you've tied the knots.
2. Choose a ribbon with a width between 1/2 inch and 1 1/2 inches to make a substantial knot. Make sure that the chosen ribbon can be fed through the ring at the top of the bell.
3. Cut a 5-inch length of ribbon. Use a diagonal cut on each end of the ribbon for an elegant detail.
4. Wave a lighter or match closely along each edge of the ribbon to seal the ends. This will prevent future frayed edges.
5. Feed the ribbon halfway through the top ring of the bell and bring the ends up to meet each other. Wrap the ribbon clockwise around the top ring to form a loop and pull the ends of the ribbon up and through the loop.
6. Pull the tips of the ribbon taut, but not too tight. Adjust the knot of the bow so that it lays smoothly over the top ring of the bell.
