Make a cover for your hula hoop.
Hula hoops are fun way for adults and children alike to get active. The action needed to spin the hula hoop on your waist burns calories and gets your heart beating faster. Hula hoops are available at most toy stores; however, standard hula hoops look similar. Most hula hoops are a solid color with a stripe down the center. If you want a more unique hula hoop to fit your personality, make your own by creating a fabric cover.
Instructions
1. Measure the outside circumference of the hula hoop using a cloth measuring tape. Take 1/2 inch away from this measurement and record the new total.
2. Cut a piece of fabric. The length is the measurement from the prior step and the width is 5 1/2 inches. Use any fabric you desire. Also, cut a piece of elastic to match your length. Then fold it in half and cut it again so that you have two pieces.
3. Place the fabric face down on your work surface. Crease one edge of the fabric back over itself and press it with an iron. Secure the edge of the fold 3/4 inch from the edge of the fold using a baste stitch. Then go back over the stitch to further secure it. Repeat the entire step with the opposite side of the fabric. You now have a rectangle of fabric with two channels.
4. Attach one end of the elastic to a safety pin and pass the pin through the channel, pulling the elastic behind it. Remove the safety pin when finished. Feed one piece of elastic through each of the two channels you created in the previous step.
5. Secure the ends of the elastic to the ends of the channel using a sewing machine. When you are done, the fabric should be scrunched up on the elastic.
6. Fold the rectangle in half along the width, right sides in. Use a sewing machine to attach the ends of the rectangle together with a 1/4 inch seam. Cut away any excess elastic that sticks out beyond the edge of the fabric.
7. Flip the finished cover right side out and put it over the outside of your hula hoop.
