Make Cute Birthday Party Decorations

Planning a birthday party includes organizing all of the details to host an event that allows everyone, especially the birthday celebrant, to have an enjoyable time. Make cute homemade birthday party decorations that coordinate with the theme and color scheme of the party. Use the interests and hobbies of the guest of honor to decide on a fitting theme. Does this Spark an idea?

Little Girl's Party

Make decorations with your little girl if she's old enough to help. This will likely make the decorations more special to her because they're her creations and it allows for additional bonding time between the two of you.

Use brightly colored craft foam to make flowers that can be hung on the walls and added to vases. Make ladybugs, butterflies, dragonflies or fairies out of the foam for a tea party, garden party or any other theme that incorporates flowers or garden critters.

Make a castle front out of large pieces of cardboard or an actual play castle out of appliance boxes. Drape inexpensive material in royal blue, violet, red or gold to cover the "walls" quickly or paint the cardboard to look like stone or brick. Add windows and a paint in a fireplace.

Little Boy's Party

Fashion a pirate ship out of an appliance box by laying it down and cutting a ship shape. Paint the cardboard to look like wood. Stuffed animals can serve as the captain's shipmate if you use a colorful parrot or little monkey. Use green construction paper to cut out palm tree leafs, then attach them to old wrapping paper rolls covered with brown construction paper. Another box can serve as a treasure chest, unless you have a chest that can be temporarily re-purposed for the party. Line the bottom of the trunk with plastic bags, books or blankets to fill up the space, then add faux pearl and gold necklaces, gold coins (possibly the chocolate variety), large faux diamonds and other gem stones.

Utilize the castle idea from the section one for a knights or prince. Craft foam can also be cut out and glued together to form a knight's armor. Crowns and tiaras work as table decorations at each place setting, then double as a favor for the other children to take home.

Make construction paper, cardboard or craft foam cutouts for a "planes, trains and automobiles" or other transportation themed party. Each decoration should have a distinctive shape, then be painted in your son's favorite colors. Hang them on the wall, or hang planes from the ceiling with string and tape. Use your son's toy cars, trains, planes and trucks to decorate the party room.

Any Birthday Party

Decorate for a carnival-themed party by setting up a popcorn, cotton candy and game booth with the booth fronts made out of cardboard. Alternate between red and white streamers, hanging them from the center of the room and letting them droop slightly and attach to a high point on the walls like a "big top."

Movie-themed birthday parties can consist of large popcorn, movie reel and director's cut decorations. Use construction paper or fabric foam to construct the mockery images and hang them around the room. Hang movie posters and display large buckets or bowls for popcorn.

Basic decorations work for most parties. These may include balloons, confetti, banners and streamers. Make a large "happy birthday" sign and have each guest draw a picture or write a message to the birthday celebrant for a decoration that doubles as a keepsake.
