Throw A Hawaiian Party

For a Hawaiian-themed party, you will want to create a warm, tropical atmosphere reminiscent of a light-hearted luau on a sandy beach. From the menu to the decorations, throwing a Hawaiian-themed party takes a little planning, a bit of creativity and a willingness to tackle a few do-it-yourself projects. With these, you can create a memorable Hawaiian party for guests of all ages. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Line the entrance to your party with luminaries. Fill 5-inch high tin pails half full of play sand, then wedge a coconut-scented votive candle---4-inches high by 3-inches wide into the sand. More than half of the candle should be ensconced in the sand. Place your DIY luminaries along your entrance way to greet guests approaching your door.

As guests walk through the door, greet them with tropical-inspired Hawaiian or reggae music and place floral leis around their necks.

2. Serve food that will make your guests imagine they are eating at an ocean-side tiki bar along the Hawaiian coast. Present food on skewers, seasoned rice, roasted bananas, fresh vegetables, crab salad and a tropical fruit salad overflowing with pineapples, mangos, kiwis, melons, strawberries and other colorful fruits. Place dishes of Macadamia nuts on guest tables. Serve foods in shaved-out melons and other fruits that you used to prepare the fruit salad. Use brightly colored plastic or paper plates, napkins and eating utensils.

3. Offer Hawaiian-inspired tropical mixed drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to the adults in your party and classic Hawaiian punch to the younger crowd. Use brightly colored plastic or paper cups, and add little umbrellas and fruit skewers in each drink to add to the tropical vibe.

4. Decorate your party space with Hawaiian-themed items. Purchase a bunch of brightly colored Hawaiian shirts from your local thrift store. After laundering them, place them on guest tables to use as tablecloths. Place coconut-scented votive candles inside small glass jars on guest tables for festive low lighting. Purchase or borrow large ficus or palm trees to place around the party space. Accent those greens with tropical flowers such as Anthuriums, Birds of Paradise or orchids. Hang more Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts on party walls to add to the tropical feeling.

5. Ask for guests' shoe size on the RSVP to the party. Purchase a pair of plain flip flops for each guest. For the girls at your party, add brightly colored artificial flowers, beads, trim to their flip flops using hot glue. Give the guys plain flip flops.
