Make Flowers Out Of A Watermelon

Watermelons have high concentrations of lycopene.

Watermelon is a refreshing fruit that is plentiful and least expensive in summer months. It is a heart-healthy option, containing amino acids that maintain cardiovascular function and blood flow. It is fat- and cholesterol-free. Seedless varieties have long been used for decorative food displays for parties and special occasions. Making flower art from watermelon is a fun, creative activity for parents to share with children. It's also an activity that can entertain children at birthday parties or play dates. Instructions

Preparation

1. Purchase firm red and yellow seedless watermelons. Buy an orange watermelon too, if you can find one. Make sure the skins do not have cuts, dents or bruises. Bottoms should have a large yellow area where it sat on the ground.

2. Spray the watermelons with white vinegar and rub them with a clean dishcloth. Rinse thoroughly, and then dry them with a dishtowel.

3. Wash the knife and cookie cutters in hot soapy water. Rinse and dry them. Make sure your hands are clean before cutting the watermelons.

4. Soak wooden skewers in green food coloring. Place them on paper towels to dry.

Cutting

5. Cut off a thin slice of skin from the bottom of the red melon to provide stability. Cut off a lengthwise piece from the top, about 1/3 of the melon. Remove skin from the piece you just cut; slice it in flat sections about ½ inch thick. Repeat the entire process with the yellow and orange melons.

6. Line up all pieces of watermelon on waxed paper. Cut out as many flower shapes as you desire with cookie cutters or use freehand designs.

7. Scoop out balls of melon with a small melon ball scoop. Attach the melon balls to the center of the flowers with a toothpick; use melon ball colors that contrast with the flower colors. Stick green skewers into the bottom of the flower heads.
