Luau parties give every guest an excuse to bring out that Hawaiian shirt hiding in the back of the closet. Warm food, fresh fruit, beach music and paper decorations also add to the atmosphere of the Hawaiian tropics that many people long for. Hosts setting up their luau party can use potted foliage from the yard and decorations from a party store. Placing a few lights around the home will also lend to the theme of the luau party. Instructions
1. Place indoor and outdoor house plants around the party area of the home. Position plants around the buffet table and guest area for outdoor luau parties. Set plants sporadically around the main room for indoor luau parties, to create a feel of the tropics.
2. Light the inside or outside of the home with hanging battery operated paper lanterns and white Christmas lights. Hang themed decorations, such as large paper palm trees, hibiscus flowers and surfboards, on walls. Place cotton fish nets below the paper decorations for an artistic touch.
3. Cover each table with colored tablecloths such as pink, blue and yellow. Drape a cotton fish net over the table covers to add character. Set fish bowls in the center of each table, and fill them with sand from a craft store along with sea shells. Place battery operated tea lights inside each bowl, on top of the sand.
4. Set paper plates, cups, utensils and napkins on a large table. Place food such as meat, chicken and white rice in warming buffet trays next to the plates and cups. Serve fresh fruit in a fruit bowl as well, and place punch inside punch bowls. Put soda and water bottles in a large bowl with ice.
5. Play traditional Hawaiian music in the background on a radio. Music with steel and slack-key guitars, ukeleles and drums will create Hawaiian island environment. If difficult to obtain, opt for beach music such as that of the Beach Boys.
6. Hand out artificial flowered leis to each guest that arrives when the party begins. Drinks may also be served as each guest enters the door.
