Test The Ripeness Of Honeydew Melons

Honeydew may be added to a standard fruit plate.

Honeydew is a melon that is similar in size to a cantaloupe and is available year round in most supermarkets. Many honeydew are shipped from California, Texas or Arizona in the warmer months, and from Mexico in the winter. Honeydew may be eaten on its own, as part of a fruit salad or cut up in yogurt. Try to choose ripe honeydew for the most flavor. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Look for an outer rind that is a creamy yellow color with no visible green veins.

2. Press on the exterior of the melon. It should be firm, but not hard, with a small amount of "give" or softness at the stem end.

3. Run your hand along the outside of the honeydew. Ripe melons have a slightly waxy feel to them.

4. Smell the stem end of the melon. A ripe melon will smell like honeydew. The smell may be less noticeable if it is still on the vine.

5. Pick up the melon in your hand to gauge the weight. A ripe honeydew feels heavy for its size.
