Throw An Elegant Party

Make your event a refined affair.

Turn a commonplace party into a truly elegant affair. Throwing an elegant event gives your guests the opportunity to surround themselves with luxury and engage in more formal interactions. Throwing an elegant event requires attention to details that create more refined foods, drinks and ambiance. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set a dress code. Creating an elegant party requires cooperation from your guests. When you send out the invitation for your event, inform guests of the dress code in a polite manner, by adding a note to the bottom of the invitation that reads, "Guests are asked to attend in," followed by the attire you are requesting of your attendees.

2. Offer formal cocktails such as cosmopolitans and Martinis in their appropriate glasses. If you don't own enough glasses to accommodate your party needs, add some inexpensive glass additions to your collection, or rent them from a party supply company.

3. Take your refined foods beyond the usual canapes and petite fours to a gourmet level. Try a simple but unusual dessert recipe like grapes covered with white chocolate dipped in orange curd or cinnamon rhubarb soup with ice cream (see References). These elegant foods will likely immediately indicate to guests that your event is an elaborate and refined affair.

4. Set a formal table. Cover your table surfaces with linens and use cloth napkins to help set the scene for your event. Use real china and silverware, and place the pieces on the table before guests arrive. Create individual centerpiece miniatures for each guest to finish off your table space. Try one long rectangular table or grouping instead of separate tables.

5. Add greenery everywhere. Use household plants, planted palms and backlight them or string clear Christmas lights on them.
