Ideas For Games To Play At A Luau Party

Tiki statues provide a stable base for ring toss games.

It's hard not to have fun at a luau-themed party given the tropical-colored decorations and sumptuous foods that are usually on display, not to mention the relaxing feelings that the islands evoke. But, tossing in some fun luau-themed gamed can amplify the fun for guests of all ages. From hula hoops to limbo poles, the possibilities for entertainment are plentiful. Does this Spark an idea?

Traditional Hawaiian Games

Ancient residents of the Hawaiian islands entertained themselves with hunting and gathering equipment and other items taken directly from nature. It's simple to replicate those ancient games because the items are still available today. For example, according to the Aloha Friends Luau website, spear-throwing was a popular game with the natives. To modernize the game, see which party guest can hit a small target with a dart from a specified distance. Or, using heavy rocks, see which guest can throw the farthest distance. The website also points out that foot races were held for both entertainment and to determine which warrior was the fastest. Different variations for party guests could include a three-legged race or a backwards running race.

Hula Games

Hawaiian luaus conjure up an image of hula dancers. Hula hoops are standard luau party fare, so invite guests to keep the hula hoops spinning, rolling or tossed like a flying disk. To really hone in on the hula theme, ask guests to perform interpretive hula dances other guests must interpret. Play tropical-themed music in the background.

Limbo

No matter the age and agility level of the guests, the traditional Hawaiian limbo dance is always a crowd-pleasing game. In fact, it can be even more fun if the majority of the guests have never done the limbo, which involves maneuvering under a bar or pole that is constantly lowered to the ground. According to the Reason to Party website, one way to make the dance unique is to ask the guests to don bathing suits and use a garden hose as the limbo stick.

General Luau Games

Tiki statues make an excellent base for a ring toss game. Vendors including Oriental Trading Company sell inflatable tiki ring-toss games as part of their luau-themed party supplies. Meanwhile, totem poles can be the inspiration for another party game involving supplying guests with face paints for them to create their own totem-like look. And, for even more crafting fun, set up a sand-art station by supplying guests with small glass bottles or jars and containers of colored sand available at most craft stores.
