Id Badge Design Ideas

ID badges are used in many settings.

Business, government and educational institutions use ID badges to restrict access to certain areas or functions. The type of ID badge you use depends on its wearer and the type of organization it represents. You'll want different designs for children, teenagers and members of a hospital medical staff, for example. What you won't want is to design ID badges that are run-of-the-mill or boring.

Picture Background

The background of your ID badge design can be either white or a color that symbolizes the organization. A scenic image adds a vivid touch. You can use computer graphics software programs to create badge designs.

After adding an image -- either artwork or photograph -- to the badge, lower the opacity setting enough to make the text for the badge clearly readable. You can use a photo of your business or a public-domain image that you find online. For a child's badge, you may want to add teddy bears or similar images.

Photos/Thumb Prints

Include a photo on your ID badge that clearly shows the person to whom the badge is issued. As long as the person is identifiable, you can use a profile photograph against an esthetically pleasing background. Place the photograph in the corner of your ID badge, with text in the center and a bar code, if applicable, on the bottom of the badge. If you need a bar code, you will need to hire a private company that specializes in bar code installations. A high-tech idea, especially if security is a major concern, is to include a spot for a thumbprint on your ID badge.

Text Selection/Signature

For an ID badge, you don't want to get so creative with the text that you make it difficult to read. Choose a font that best matches the type of badge being issued. Choose a different font style for the name of the person being identified and the name of the business or other organization. Use a different font style for a tag line consisting of an organizational motto or slogan, or make it italics or boldface to draw attention to it. Provide a blank space at the bottom for the ID bearer's signature.
