Ideas For Luau Games

Bring a taste of Hawaii to your party with a luau.

Though the Hawaiian luau first started as a means to celebrate the King of Hawaii in 1819, it now has become synonymous with a themed summer party in the backyard. Because the rich cultural background of Hawaii lends itself to celebrating all things summer, planning a Hawaiian luau for your party makes sense. Prepare some games to keep everyone entertained as they bask in the sunshine.

Surfing the Waves

Place a surfboard in the middle of your party space. Pick one player to stand on the board while four other players surround the board, placing their hands beneath it. When you say "Go," the players start to shake the board. The "surfer" has to stay on top of the board for as long as he can as you record his time. Allow all of your guests to have a try. The person with the longest time on the surfboard wins.

Pineapple Relay

Divide the players into pairs and have everyone line up at one end of the yard. Give each pair a pineapple. Tell them they have to hold the pineapple between them; either by holding it between their stomachs or between their backs. When you say "Go," each of the pairs has to make it to the finish line and back without dropping their pineapples. If a pair does drop their pineapple, they have to start over from the beginning. The first pair to make it back to the start wins.

Around the Islands Hula Toss

Create cutouts of each of the seven Hawaiian islands, making them big enough for a person's feet to stand on. Place a large bucket on the ground and surround the bucket with the island cutouts in a semi-circle shape. Think of a basketball hoop surrounded by the court markings in front of the hoop when you do this. Have everyone take turns throwing a hula hoop around the large bucket while standing on every single island. The person who completes the most throws wins the game.

Hunt for Seashells

Gather together a large amount of seashells and place these inside a kiddie pool. Fill the pool with other things like fake fish and Hawaiian leis, as well. Add enough sand inside the pool to cover all of the items. Line all the players up about 6 feet from the pool. When you say "Go," the first player in line races over to the pool and tries to collect as many seashells as he can within five seconds. Allow all of the other players a turn in increments of five seconds until no seashells remain. The player with the most seashells wins.
