Make Birthday Pinatas

A pinata adds fun and excitement to an event, and building your own pinata is a great way to get started. Give yourself plenty of time to create your pinata, since it can take a few days to complete.

Instructions

1. Tear the newspaper into many small strips, about one inch wide and about four inches long. Put them aside.

2. Mix the flour and water with a small amount of school glue. Exact proportions will not make a difference in the quality of the paste, as long as the result is fairly thin. Be sure to stir out all the lumps in the flour.

3. Blow up the balloon. This will form the interior of your pinata, so make sure you blow the balloon up as far as possible without popping it, then tie it off.

4. Dip each strip of newspaper into the paste, and then lay it carefully on the balloon. When you have coated the entire balloon, set it aside to dry.

5. When the pinata's first layer has dried (this may take several hours), do a second layer. Repeat this and the previous step four or five times in order to make a strong, thick pinata.

6. Give the pinata one day to dry completely.

7. Paint the pinata with the poster paints, and leave it to dry again.

8. Cut a small hole in the top of the pinata using a sharp knife - this will pop the balloon, but as long as you have let it dry, your pinata will not collapse. Peel back a two-inch square flap in the pinata exterior.

9. Stuff the pinata with the wrapped candies until it is full.

10. Use heavy tape to attach one end of the string to your pinata, then the other end to the long pole.

11. At the party, give your guests a baseball bat and hold the pinata high above their heads. They can hit the pinata and wait for the shower of candy to fall.
